Since 2016, Google Pixel phones have been released annually, and each one has typically had one issue that was close to breaking the deal.

The Pixel 3 and 3 XL had inconsistent memory management, the Pixel 4 had poor battery life, and the Pixel 2 XL had a poor display.

The Pixel 6 and 6 Pro of 2021 were much better fully formed products that heralded a new era; consequently, it stands to reason that their ilk, the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro—the latter of which is the subject of this review—are iterative updates.

If you want a phone with one of the best camera systems, a top display, and the most thoughtful interpretation of Android, the Pixel 7 Pro is the best Pixel to date.

Design & Build

The Pixel 7 Star has had a slight overhaul yet seems to be the 6 Master. It has a distinctive "camera bar," which is a strip that runs across the top half of the phone and houses the triple rear camera. This year, however, the "camera bar" is covered in polished metal rather than just dark glass.

It gives the telephone a mechanical look, with a pill shape for two of the focal points and a roundabout one for the third. I like the look of the 6 Pro better, but this new design makes it look a little tacky. I also like the regular Pixel 7's matte metal finish better.

Even though the design of this phone is unappealing, I have never been put off using it. The problem is this phone's size; at 212g, it is huge and heavy.

This heavy and bulky phone measures 162.9 x 76.6 x 8.9 mm and fits comfortably in hand, pocket, or bag. It is nearly identical in size to the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra and is taller and thicker than the iPhone 14 Pro Max.

We all have to deal with the fact that the best phones are now quite large.

My survey unit was the white tone, which Google calls Snow. It looks great, and more phones should be white (there are also phones in black and grey/green, respectively, called Obsidian and Hazel).

Aside from the camera bar that looks like something out of Star Trek, the chassis is made of silver-polished aluminum, which Google claims is 100% recycled. Only a USB-C port, mic, speaker, and power button on the bottom, a volume rocker and power button on the right, and a small microphone on top separate the rails. There is no expandable storage and only one SIM slot on the left edge.

The front and back glass are made of tough Gorilla Glass Victus, but Chris Martin, a coworker of mine, discovered that his regular Pixel 7 had cracked when it hit the asphalt from a low height. The phone is IP68-rated for dust and water resistance if there are no cracks.

Although it is without a doubt a well-built phone that feels more sturdy than the Pixel 6 Pro, I still prefer a smaller device to this absolute behemoth.

The Pixel 7 Pro's screen is one of the best I've ever used on a phone, and Google has hit a six. Shows appear to get crisper and more brilliant consistently some way or another, and next to each other with the Pixel 6 Ace, the 7 Expert works on in the two regions.

It has a resolution of 3120 x 1440 and is a 6.7-inch Quad HD+ panel. It also has a 120Hz refresh rate and looks amazing smooth, better than the iPhone 13 Pro or 14 Pro from Apple. The 7 Pro, like those phones, uses LTPO technology to slow down when not in use to save battery life.

You can run the display at 1080p with another battery-saving option, but everything looks best at 1440p and 120Hz. It is the best reason to purchase the 7 Pro over the regular 7 in addition to the camera.

Strangely, Google immediately puts the phone in dark mode. Because the blue light that reaches my eyes is less intense when I use my phones in dark mode, and because OLED displays like these use less battery power, I prefer dark mode.

The Pixel 7's regular model, on the other hand, has a flat screen if you prefer. Larger phones typically have screens that slightly curve at the edges.

Even though I would never recommend blasting music from your phone's speakers, the Pixel 7 Pro sounds quite good if you do. It's not as well-rounded at high volumes as the iPhone 14, but it's fine for podcasts and YouTube.

For the second year in a row, Google has utilized its jointly developed Tensor chipset with Samsung. Although the 7 Pro's G2 is solid, it lacks the raw compute power of the iPhone 14 Pro's A16.

Tensor is at its best when used with vanilla, one of my favorite flavors of Android from Google. On the 7 Pro, Android 13 runs smoothly and has the personality and fun that most phone operating systems lack, which are typically serious and austere.

With Material You, you can fine-tune and personalize your phone with beautiful wallpaper options and color palette selection, and the always-on display remains simple and does not drain the battery.

The Pixel's on-device processing is a significant benefit. This indicates that it can perform cool tasks like transcription and dictation without connecting to the internet. This keeps some of these processes off Google's servers while still allowing the phone to be useful in airplane mode and when there is no signal.

For instance, if you are hard of hearing and struggle to keep up with a conversation, you can use Live Transcribe to transcribe the speech of another person in real time. You can choose to save the transcript to your Google account or keep it offline using the Google Recorder app's offline transcription feature.

Additionally, you can use the Assistant Voice Typing feature to dictate messages into any messaging app or view transcripts of audio messages sent through Google's Messages app. According to Google, the features become more intelligent as you use them more. The dictation is comparable to the iOS version, in my opinion.

While I did not receive any spam messages when reviewing an iPhone in the weeks prior, I did receive some when texting the phone, despite Google's software being excellent at preventing spam calls from ever reaching me. In addition, I find it admirable that Google is utilizing AI to enhance the sound of voice calls when many smartphone manufacturers neglect the phone itself.

In addition, you get brand-new features like the ability to detect snoring and coughing at night, as well as the in-screen fingerprint reader and the face unlock option. The first option only unlocks the phone; however, if you select Only show notification content when unlocked, the Pixel behaves similarly to an iPhone, displaying notifications only when it recognizes your face.

The fingerprint sensor is superior to the shaky one on the 6 Pro in all other respects, including banking biometrics. It is also more dependable.

The Pixel 7 Pro will receive security updates from Google for five years, or until late 2027. That's pretty good going. Although there are only three years of platform updates, the phone will only receive Android 16 in 2025.

If you want the most recent software features over time, Samsung and Apple offer longer OS update support on most of their phones.

Photographing with the Pixel 7 Pro is an absolute pleasure. During my time with it, I've taken pictures that I know I wouldn't have taken with an iPhone, especially of fast-moving subjects.

One of the best on a phone is the main sensor, which captures exquisite detail and has an incredible dynamic range. The Pixel froze confetti at a wedding in time, perfectly crisping each petal.

I like how different Google's image processing is from that of other manufacturers. Although it evokes film photography in a way that Apple's processing does not, it is a moodier and stylistic choice. The iPhone 14 is a great camera, but it over-sharpenes its images. Samsung uses too many colors. I enjoyed shooting in RAW and editing the images later on my desktop on the Pixel, which made me happier.

Having said that, I discovered instances in which the Vivo X80 Pro outperformed the Pixel. The X80 is consistently able to pick out details that phones can't, like showing a blue sky through a window in a dark room. The Vivo always succeeds due to its larger main sensor, while the Pixel and iPhone frequently fail to distinguish blue skies. Comparatively, the Pixel handles subjects with greater precision.

The Pixel 7 Expert's cameras are basically the same as those on the Pixel 6 Star, with a 50Mp principal focal point with f/1.85, a 12Mp ultrawide with f/2.2 and self-adjust, and a 48Mp zooming focal point with f/3.5. With Google's Super Res Zoom software, which adjusts for hand shake, the latter can now zoom to 5x optical or 30x digital.

The phone takes a picture with both the main and telephoto lenses when you zoom in between 2.5x and 5x, combining them into a single image. Google uses all of the lenses on the Pixel and a lot of compute power from the Tensor G2 to stitch them together and render a scene that is closer to what a DSLR could do without software tricks for a lot of what Google does with the cameras on the Pixel.

5x images look great in good lighting, but they lack detail and have grain in low light. The results are also pretty good if you zoom in more. I shot the clock tower of the St. Pancras Hotel at 30x, and it turned out much better than I expected (see slideshow below). The 10x shot is better, exceptionally fresh and clear. Even though optical zooms, like the 10x optical on the Galaxy S22 Ultra, are preferred, this is a fine digital zoom.

The ultrawide's new stunt is making large scale efforts that can remain in center from up to three centimeters away. When you hold the camera close to an object, the mode automatically activates. Although it's a clever trick, the iPhone 13 Pro and 14 Pro's results are more impressive and sharp.

The 10.8Mp f/2.2 lens in the middle of the screen at the top is the front-facing camera. I like its 92.8-degree wide field of view, which makes it ideal for video calls and selfies.

Night Sight and Astrophotography, two pixel favorites that do a better job of unblurring, continue to impress. You won't be disappointed with this all-around camera system, which is as versatile as the S22 Ultra and X80 Pro. However, the Pixel is the most dependable of these phones, which is very important. I've always trusted it to produce excellent images.

By introducing the video mode of Cinematic Blur on the 7 Pro, Google directly copied Apple's Cinematic Mode. It obscures the foundation behind your subject while recording video and, similar to Apple's, can zero in on one or the other plane and switch between the two. It works, as does the clever Magic Eraser feature, which you can use to remove people or objects from a photo if you think they are ruining the image.

Overall, video capture is good, and you can record at 30 frames per second in 4K with 10-bit HDR turned off or 60 frames per second.

The Face Unblur feature, which is tagged on a photo if it steps in, is easier to use and does exactly what it says to improve your shots. With Photo Unblur, both new and old photos can be manually blurred. The Pixel 7 phones only have the ability to blur any older photo.

Battery life is one of the most noticeable improvements over the Pixel 6 Pro year after year. The 7 Pro's massive 5000mAh battery is stretched to its limits by Google, and it never died on me. In point of fact, I frequently left a full day of use with more than 40% remaining on the battery, and the phone frequently lasted me well into the second day.

Even though the wired charging is only 23W, which is slow compared to other Android flagships, even if you use Google's own 30W charger, it can be fully charged in 30 minutes, which is very handy and sufficient for most people. The Pixel Stand 2 also offers reverse wireless charging at a relatively slow 23W speed, which can be used to quickly charge wireless earbuds or smartwatches with smaller batteries or other phones that are compatible.

Although you might expect smartphones that cost the most to have the longest battery life, the opposite is usually the case: typically, the more powerful a phone is, the shorter its lifespan is. I'm cheerful the 7 Ace avoids this pattern, and it nearly compensates for how huge the thing is.

Price & Availability

The 128GB Pixel 7 Pro costs $899, or £849, or €899, which may seem like a lot, but it is actually quite affordable and on par with the competition. The 256GB model costs $999, £949, or €999, and a 512GB model costs $1,099. The phone, a USB-C cable, and a USB-A adapter to transfer data from your previous phone are all included in the box.

From the Google Store, you can get it in the US, UK, Canada, and Europe. It is also available in Ireland, Japan, and Australia, among other places.

The iPhone 14, which costs $799, has a screen that only refreshes at 60 Hz, no telephoto lens, and cannot take RAW photos (unlike the more expensive iPhone 14 Plus).

The iPhone 14 Pro, which costs $999, £1,099, or €1,329, is the best Apple has to offer, but it costs more than Google's Pixel.

The Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra costs a ridiculous $1,199, or £1,149, or €1,279, but since it is only a few months old, you should be able to find it at a lower price. However, this demonstrates that the Pixel 7 Pro is a better deal than the competition.

You could also go with the standard Pixel 7, which costs $599, £599, or $649.

Verdict

The Google Pixel 7 Pro is one of the best smartphones of 2022. Its bulky size, weight, and slightly unattractive design are its only drawbacks, unless you disagree with me.

If you are able to deal with that, you will be very pleased with the phone's most adaptable and consistent camera setup, beautiful display, and the most intelligent and useful version of Android.

The Tensor G2 isn't the most powerful phone you can buy, but it excels at on-device features that set it apart from other products, and its battery life can actually last for two days. However, charging could be done faster.

The Pixel 7 Pro is highly recommended because it comes with security updates until 2027 and costs significantly less than other brands. The regular Pixel 7 costs less and offers many of the same features for less money.
